Waste Packaging Regulations 1997
There are many companies throughout the United Kingdom that have to comply with the Waste Packaging Regulations of 1997. This placed the responsibility on the producer of the waste to account for the quantity of packaging waste produced. The regulations affect any company involved in the packaging supply chain that has a turnover in excess of £2 million, or which handles more than 50 tonnes of packaging each year (This is equivalent to about 250 pallets).
Under the regulations, companies carry out their producer responsibility by purchasing enough packaging waste recovery notes (PRN’s) or their export equivalent (PERNs) to meet their obligation, which depends on how much packaging they place on the market.
Obligated companies can sign up to compliance schemes or purchase PRN’s or PERNs themselves from companies who are accredited re-processors.
PRN prices can fluctuate significantly and usually is on a supply on demand basis.
